In another experiment on the cutting table, I combined folded papercuts with layered papercuts. Taking the palette of both the male and female cardinal, I butted them together creating a single bird, a half male, half female cardinal. I am an avid birder. So much of identification is done by sight. Memorizing the over 500 species of birds found in New York is complicated by the differences between male, female, juvenile. This piece plays with the parts both the same and so different in the genders of our familiar northern cardinals.
