Silverpoint drawing of a cottontail rabbit on a blue-tinted prepared ground with glowing accents in white gouache. A hawk feather caught in the tree branches speaks to a threat above the unsuspecting bunny. Due to the nature of this medium, the silver will gradually tarnish and take on a warm patina
As an environmentalist and visual storyteller working in western New York, my work is almost entirely informed by the woods and rural habitats around me. While this is constant, my love of trying new materials inspired me to explore metalpoint. This work is done in silverpoint, which is an old drawing method done by the masters including Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer. I have the advantage of modern grounds and a premade stylus, but I think it still achieves an old-world look I admire in these historical drawings. The unaware cottontail rabbit hides in the brush with evidence of a raptor above.
